Review of Steel Bolt Hacking (Paperback)

The book's intended purpose as stated is to sell lockpicking as a competitive sport, or club. While I agree with the message, several problems made the book very nearly unreadable, and left me wondering why I'd spent money on what is so obviously an amateur web-page in bound form.

As mentioned, much of the information is copy/pasted from one chapter to the next, up to and including diagrams and pictures, with no real reason for the repetition.I suppose the author might have wanted to illustrate how similar different types of locks are in function, but this is a poor way at best to do so.Additionally, numerous spelling and grammatical mistakes broke up whatever flow the book had, from the rapidly (and incorrectly) changing tenses in the author's anecdotes, to simpler mistakes such as 6this. [sic]

If you find this book used, it might be worth the price.Still, if you have any idea already how a lock works, you're better off searching the web for How-To's and FAQ's.It's obvious the author does know the material, and that's what makes me most upset about the book.If he'd bothered to hire an editor, or even a proofreader, he would have improved the book's quality immeasurably, and perhaps made it more saleable.

Product Description
Steel Bolt Hacking is a lock picking book for those that want to learn the art of picking locks as a hobby. With such annual events as DefCon, the annual hackers convention, more and more computer people are becoming interested in learning lock picking. Lock picking sports groups are springing up all over the world with little or no books to support it. Typically the art of lock picking is passed down from locksmith to apprentice and rarely are there any material to help those interested in lock picking, that don't necessarily want to become a locksmith to learn it. Steel Bolt Hacking will teach you more than just the basics, you will learn to pick padlocks, deadbolts, push button combination locks, and how find the number on combination padlocks.

Review of ACT! 2000 Fast & Easy (Paperback)

Flip quickly through the book and you will see one of its strengths -- screen shots on every page illustrating every step described. Yet it isn't one of those ten minute quick and easy guides with pictures; these screenshots are illustrating how to use the program effectively.

The sellingpoint for me: The instructions on customizing the forms comes right at thebeginning of the book! So it helps you set up ACT for your own needs rightfrom the start. Other books hold this information until right at the end, treating it as an option rather than the essential task it is.

Product Description
ACT! 2000 Fast & Easy provides you with an easy, visualway to learn this popular contact management program. Step-by-step,screen-by-screen, this book provides precise guidance new usersneed. It also introduces experienced users to the new features of thisnew version.

Review of Complete Idiot's Guide to Microsoft Office 2000 (Paperback)

I have to admit that I'm becoming addicted to the idiot's guides.Contrary to their title, they help experts and idiots alike. For thenovice, most of this material may be new, but even the expert can pick upsome great tips. The book is divided into the major office programs: Word, Outlook, Access, Powerpoint and Excel.Though individual books focusin more detail on each of these programs, there is certainly enoughinformation here to do the majority of projects that most people would beinclined to do.The great thing about these guides is that you willsuddenly find yourself unable to unlock a much higher potential of thesepowerful programs, particularly in Excel. The chapter on Excel is veryeasy to follow and teaches you how to do the most common formulas likeautosum.Even regular Word users will perfect the art of making tables, even for such common items as resumes. The format is extremely readableand easy to follow.I find that these guides only take a few hours toread, but the effects last for months.Highly recommended for anyone whowants a quick refresher course on the most common features of these officeprograms.

Review of Podcast Solutions: The Complete Guide to Podcasting (Paperback)

Of particular interest to me were the production and post-production chapters, but if you're interested in starting your own podcast and want to learn the smallest of details without being or feeling bogged down with a lot of information this book is for you.

Geoghegan and Klass are two experienced podcasters who put out high quality podcasts. They take you pretty much step-by-step on how to obtain third-party podcasts (which they rightly suggest you should listen to to learn how others do it), from downloading tools and Web sites of interest. They provide detailed information on the types of equipment you need, from a simple mic plugged into your computer to mixers and other hardware you may wish to have, and how to use them effectively for your podcast. They go into great depth into how to record your podcast effectively by setting levels and using your equipment properly, and how to edit and improve your sound quality, all the while warning you on the little pitfalls that can make your podcast difficult to listen to. They also tell you how to get your podcast on the Net, from registering your own domain and finding hosting (or using services such as Blogger), as well as how to set up the extremely important (to podcasting, at least), RSS feed. You are even given advice on how to make money as a podcaster.

There is also a CD included with a number of excellent trial versions of a variety of software for both Mac (OS X) and Windows which can help you get started in your podcasting venture.

The material plus the CD really make this an excellent, insightful purchase well worth the price of the book. Kudos for Geoghegan and Klass for crafting a wonderful book that will aid the novice (and slightly experienced podcasters like myself) into making well-produced podcasts.

Review of Amazon.com for Dummies (Paperback)

My friend sent this book to me because they know how much I order from amazon - last count it was over 1400 items in a little over two years.I send gifts around the world from amazon, love their gift certificates, am an amazon associate for my website. So they thought it was a cute gift. The book is very well done, and tells you all about the ins and out of many of the amazon features, but....all this information is already here on the amazon website - FREE.

Why would someone pay for a book that is slightly, ripping off amazon's own words?Oh, well, as the commercial review said, they have arrived...
