Review of There's No Business Without the Show: Using Showbiz Skills to Get Blockbuster Sales (Hardcover)

The concepts of selling aren't new... but I can honestly say I got some ideas from this book that I hadn't tried before. It's a new way for me to look at how I present a sale. Heck, I figure one nugget that helps me close a sale is well worth the price of the book -- and it was. I thought about what Becka said about it all being a show and I changed a few things I said in the next presentation. I landed the biggest contract of my career. (No lie!) It also gives me some concrete guidelines that I want to establish with my staff -- it's all a show...they are part of my cast too. Another benefit: I laughed my butt off in some places (very rare for a business book!) This book is on my business shelf next to the Guerilla books (I have over 200 books on small business).

Product Description
Showbiz is really two words.
There's the show part and there's the business part.
Without the business, there is no show. Without the show, there is no business.
Tom Becka brings together his experiences as a stand-up comedian, radio host, teacher, sales manager, and columnist to show you the powerful techniques entertainers use to engage their audiences. Want to know how you can use these surprisingly simple techniques in your sales career?

Review of Take Command!: Leadership Lessons from the Civil War (Paperback)

As a professor of English, I'm probably the least likely person to purchase a book on leadership in business, but I consider this book a real gem with which to kick off my reading for 2000. Wheeler's brief, but insightful, examinations of leadership under the most stressful conditionsare both entertaining and highly useful to anyone who aspires to successfulmanagement of one's business or professional life. He conveys hissubstantive knowledge of both the Civil War and the conflicts of moderncapitalism in a focused and fluid manner. It is always a pleasure todiscover a writer who is passionate about his work, and I look forward tohis next contribution to the genre.

Review of Designing the Best Call Center for Your Business, 2nd Edition (Paperback)

Call centers are a key part of our lives even if we have never set foot into one of them. Author Brendan B. Read has done an outstanding job of telling the reader how to design, plan and create call centers to supply those functions cost-effectively to satisfy both users and your organization..

Read begins this 2nd edition of the book by defining what call centers are. Next, the author takes a hard look at what functions call centers provide for you to determine which of them you need for your organization and how to justify their costs. Then, he discusses what type of planning takes place in the call center. From there, you can then begin to explore your strategies, The author will then leave you to look at alternatives for live agent handling, including self -service (IVR, outbound voice messaging or OVM, fax, automated email, or Web self-service); home agents; and, outsourcing. Read continues by presenting specific characteristics and issues entailed in serving Spanish-speaking Americans that affect call center planning, operations, and costs. In addition, the author describes several characteristics of serving foreign markets with call centers that you must take into account. He then provides you with a set of requirements for buying property for your call center. Read next suggests that if you maximize your investment, you also need to keep your call center clean, functioning properly, and protected. Also, according to Read, "your attention should be focused on selecting the right agents; as well as, training strategies." The author then continues to discuss training strategies and how to retain agents. Next, he touches on the key issues that affect your call center's performance and how to maximize your returns. Finally, he finishes up by recommending a great call center resources guide.

With the preceding in mind, the author has done an excellent job of exploring most of the facets of call centers. That's why he focused on call center creation.

Review of Crew Resource Management for the Fire Service (Hardcover)

I think, if embraced, CRM could do more to prevent FF injury and fatality than any combination of initiatives currently in vogue in the fire service.CRM is about using all resources available to accomplish the mission. The mission, by the way, is not the standard risk management slogan we all know: risk a lot for lives, risk a little for property...The mission is that everyone goes home safely.Safety is the operation.

CRM derives from the aviation industry in the 1970s.What was found was that airplanes were not causing crashes, human behavior was.Meaning, it was not mechanical malfunctions causing planes to go down, it was the pilots flying them.Interesting.Fewer fires, more protective gear, building codes, suppression systems, SOPs, risk management, safety officers, command teams, IRIC and RIC teams, excellent training, TICs, etc., and we still kill 100 firefighters per year. Are we that steeped in tradition that we can't see that human behavior kills firefighters?Let's give CRM a chance. If the aviation industry is an example, we will see a dramatic decrease in FF injury and fatality.

This book is above average. My only constructive criticism was the implementation aspect. While there is a lot of good information, including the last chapter about implementing CRM, the substance of the book doesn't really define how that would happen. That said, I really liked this book.It will be tough for a lot of firefighters to digest because it is conceptual and not practical hands-on stuff.

For another excellent introduction to CRM I would refer readers to Dennis Rubin and his series on CRM through Firehouse magazine. These articles also provide a good introduction to this topic.

It is worth purchasing this book and I would recommend adding it to any fire department library, or personal library.

Product Description
Crew Resource Management for the Fire Service will provide fire service professionals with the necessary communication, leadership, and decision-making tools to operate safely and effectively under stressful conditions, thereby reducing injuries and deaths on the emergency scene. Although the concept of crew resource management has been around since the 1970s, this is the first book to apply CRM to the fire service industry. CRM emphasizes that in most cases technology isn't the root cause of catastrophe-human error is the culprit. Therefore steps taken to minimize the impact of errors are the keys to reducing the magnitude of the inevitable human failing. This book will be valuable for college classes, and may be used internationally by the fire service, emergency medical services, industrial fire brigades, technical rescue teams, and any other emergency service provider systems.

Features & benefits:

Explains the predictable manner in which firefighters react to stressful situations

Teaches methods and tools to combat these problems to provide safer and more effective operations

Provides a framework for cultural change in fire departments

Perfectly suited for both wildland and structural firefighters

Review of Montgomery Ward & Co. Catalogue and Buyers' Guide 1895 [FACSIMILE] (Paperback)

The Montgomery Ward catalog is just what I needed. I'm writing a historical romance set in the 1890s and the catalog has been so helpful as a visual aid with the clothing, furniture, and even kitchen utensils available to people at that time.

Product Description
Before the Internet, Wal-Mart, and the shopping mall, there was Montgomery Ward.

"Our mail order methods meet many wants," wrote a poetic but anonymous copywriter on a page of the 1895 Montgomery Ward & Co. catalogue. He had a gift for understatement. At its zenith from the 1880s to the 1940s, Montgomery Ward, like its cross-town Chicago rival, Sears, sold virtually everything the average American could think of or desire-and by mail. This was a revolution, and Ward's fired the first shot. To buy spittoons, books of gospel hymns, hat pins, rifles, wagons, violins, birdcages, or portable bathtubs, purchases that used to require many separate trips to specialist merchants, suddenly all the American shopper had to do was lick a stamp. This unabridged facsimile of the retail giant's 1895 catalogue showcases some 25,000 items, from the necessities of life (flour, shirts) to products whose time has passed (ear trumpets). It is an important resource for antiquaries, students of Americana, writers of historical fiction, and anyone who wants to know how much his great-grandfather paid for his suspenders. It is a true record of an era. 20,000 b/w illustrations.

Review of Even a Geek Can Speak (Paperback)

This book was very helpful for learning great ways to formulate everyday presentations. As an engineer, it is easier for me to follow a straightforward formula than start a presenation from scratch.I was able to learn how to better capture my audience's attention.I recommend it!

Product Description
In today's high-tech world, it's cool to be a geek. But it's not cool to talk like a geek. Even a Geek Can Speak shows anyone how to express complex ideas in ways that are simple, that connect with listeners, and that persuade.

Focusing Your Message: One internet security executive won over non-technical business owners by focusing on the importance of internet security to the business world. Result: Listeners said - I'm buying that stock.

Keeping it Simple: A software consultant steered clear of the technical details when pitching to a CEO and focused on three key points: saving money, security and competitiveness. Result: He won the business.

Telling Stories: A telecommunications saleswoman spoke to a users' group and illustrated her points with stories, rather than dwelling too much in detail. Result: A jump in new orders.

Not Looking Like a Geek: An internet executive learned to connect with his audience merely by energizing his voice. Result: He received praise unlike any he'd received before.
