Review of Managing for Sales Results: A Fast-Action Guide to Finding, Coaching & Leading Salespeople (Hardcover)

My only beef about this book is its title. It should be "Leading for Sales Results".

It is rare with all the "me too" books out there to see something that delivers.Mr. Marks does just that. It's a book I simply couldn't put down.

Leadership has become quite the buzz word lately. You can't pick up any business magazine without seeing a relevant article. But most of it just transposes the word leadership for management. While Mr Marks book is still a top down management style vs my training in Dynamic Governance--it brings some of the concepts to light.

I won't go through the book on a one by one line item--but a few ideas will entice you to purchase.

Ideas on where to find salespeople using "Guerrilla" tactics are not new but bear repeating.Prospecting is very important to me.I often cold call an office to receive not an inquiry for a product, but an interview. If cold calling is important to you, and you are cold called upon--there you go.Look for places where people use this skills but may be underpaid and opportunity challenged. The author suggests Nordstroms, where they probably not only have the skills but a professional wardrobe.

In interviewing, evaluate how the person thinks about his/her purchases. If you market a product with a one time close cycle and your candidate is a slow, think it over, take your time kind of sales buyer--they may have trouble pushing a prospect to purchase differently than their own style. The Japanese have a saying, "as above so below".Its amazingly basic but I never thought of it that way.

A recent blog entry on my website was a article on dread.Salespeople live their lives in dread because of prospecting, yet managers pick their battles and don't push it.As the author points out, prospecting is discussed during the interview and is given lip service by the candidate, but no follow through. As a manager if you allow that to happen, you are more at fault than the salesperson.Marks "call to action" is so simple and step by step, you don't have any more excuses.

Nothing here is hard to implement. One easy "take away" I will implement in my sales training and coaching is the C-Letter or commitment letter. It simply says as manager you agree to give the employee all the tools they need to succeed. The employee agrees to use those tools. This letter becomes a talking point in follow up evaluations.

Follow up evaluations are explained in wonderfully simple detail. This is a great read and one of the very few I'd heartedly recommend.

Product Description
Ron Marks puts his decades of experience in the field of sales leadership to work to spell out an effective, profitable management method for the most important and unique employees in any business: salespeople. With an intelligent and easy to understand argument for the kind of leadership that motivates salespeople and instantly useful practical tips to improve productivity, reduce turnover, increase employee satisfaction, and ensure that you hire smart instead of hiring often, this book proves that there is a much quicker route to effective management than years of trial and error.

Review of There's No Business Without the Show: Using Showbiz Skills to Get Blockbuster Sales (Hardcover)

The concepts of selling aren't new... but I can honestly say I got some ideas from this book that I hadn't tried before. It's a new way for me to look at how I present a sale. Heck, I figure one nugget that helps me close a sale is well worth the price of the book -- and it was. I thought about what Becka said about it all being a show and I changed a few things I said in the next presentation. I landed the biggest contract of my career. (No lie!) It also gives me some concrete guidelines that I want to establish with my staff -- it's all a show...they are part of my cast too. Another benefit: I laughed my butt off in some places (very rare for a business book!) This book is on my business shelf next to the Guerilla books (I have over 200 books on small business).

Product Description
Showbiz is really two words.
There's the show part and there's the business part.
Without the business, there is no show. Without the show, there is no business.
Tom Becka brings together his experiences as a stand-up comedian, radio host, teacher, sales manager, and columnist to show you the powerful techniques entertainers use to engage their audiences. Want to know how you can use these surprisingly simple techniques in your sales career?

Review of Take Command!: Leadership Lessons from the Civil War (Paperback)

As a professor of English, I'm probably the least likely person to purchase a book on leadership in business, but I consider this book a real gem with which to kick off my reading for 2000. Wheeler's brief, but insightful, examinations of leadership under the most stressful conditionsare both entertaining and highly useful to anyone who aspires to successfulmanagement of one's business or professional life. He conveys hissubstantive knowledge of both the Civil War and the conflicts of moderncapitalism in a focused and fluid manner. It is always a pleasure todiscover a writer who is passionate about his work, and I look forward tohis next contribution to the genre.

Review of The Barefoot Investor: Five Steps to Financial Freedom in Your 20s and 30s (Paperback)

If you've read any investment books, this one fits in with all of them and doesn't really offer anything new.Not a bad book if you are new to the idea of investing and building wealth long-term.It also has sections on other life issues, such as renting vs. owning.Be warned that the author hails from Australia, so a lot of the content is useful but different from how things are in the US.

I give it four stars because it's a decent book and the author writes in a very comfortable style, even though much of the material is pretty basic.

Review of Cases and Exercises in International Management (Paperback)

The cases are deceptively simple, yet they hook students (undergraduate and graduate alike) and make them reflect on important International Management Issues. This book is, for the money, a great companion text for a class in International Management.I like this author's other Case book in International Business for the very same reason.Well worth the investment.

Product Description
This book acts as a supplement to the traditional text in international or cross-cultural management. The book provides a practical approach to the study of the subject, and students can apply what they have read in the textbook or learned in class to problems relevant to transnational management. A strong emphasis of the book is the importance of culture to international management issues.A particular strength of the book is the diversity of cultures found in the cases. The text is based on the belief that learning is best achieved through more active student involvement in the educational process.

About the Author
Charles A. Rarick is Professor of International Business in the School of Management at Purdue University at Calumet. Previously he held the position of Director of International Business and Professor of Management in the Andreas School of Business, Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. He has lectured at Instituto Tecnologico y Estudios Superiores de Monterrey ITESM (Mexico), EAFIT in Colombia, University of International Business and Economics in China, and the Romanian-American University in Bucharest. Review of Crew Resource Management for the Fire Service (Hardcover)

I think, if embraced, CRM could do more to prevent FF injury and fatality than any combination of initiatives currently in vogue in the fire service.CRM is about using all resources available to accomplish the mission. The mission, by the way, is not the standard risk management slogan we all know: risk a lot for lives, risk a little for property...The mission is that everyone goes home safely.Safety is the operation.

CRM derives from the aviation industry in the 1970s.What was found was that airplanes were not causing crashes, human behavior was.Meaning, it was not mechanical malfunctions causing planes to go down, it was the pilots flying them.Interesting.Fewer fires, more protective gear, building codes, suppression systems, SOPs, risk management, safety officers, command teams, IRIC and RIC teams, excellent training, TICs, etc., and we still kill 100 firefighters per year. Are we that steeped in tradition that we can't see that human behavior kills firefighters?Let's give CRM a chance. If the aviation industry is an example, we will see a dramatic decrease in FF injury and fatality.

This book is above average. My only constructive criticism was the implementation aspect. While there is a lot of good information, including the last chapter about implementing CRM, the substance of the book doesn't really define how that would happen. That said, I really liked this book.It will be tough for a lot of firefighters to digest because it is conceptual and not practical hands-on stuff.

For another excellent introduction to CRM I would refer readers to Dennis Rubin and his series on CRM through Firehouse magazine. These articles also provide a good introduction to this topic.

It is worth purchasing this book and I would recommend adding it to any fire department library, or personal library.

Product Description
Crew Resource Management for the Fire Service will provide fire service professionals with the necessary communication, leadership, and decision-making tools to operate safely and effectively under stressful conditions, thereby reducing injuries and deaths on the emergency scene. Although the concept of crew resource management has been around since the 1970s, this is the first book to apply CRM to the fire service industry. CRM emphasizes that in most cases technology isn't the root cause of catastrophe-human error is the culprit. Therefore steps taken to minimize the impact of errors are the keys to reducing the magnitude of the inevitable human failing. This book will be valuable for college classes, and may be used internationally by the fire service, emergency medical services, industrial fire brigades, technical rescue teams, and any other emergency service provider systems.

Features & benefits:

Explains the predictable manner in which firefighters react to stressful situations

Teaches methods and tools to combat these problems to provide safer and more effective operations

Provides a framework for cultural change in fire departments

Perfectly suited for both wildland and structural firefighters

About the Author

Review of Marketing for Rainmakers: 52 Rules of Engagement to Attract and Retain Customers for Life (Hardcover)

There are a lot of marketing books out there, and I've read or glanced through the majority of them. The key problem with most marketing books, though, is that they take one good idea and milk it for 300 pages. What I liked about this book is the breadth and variety of ideas. While not every single one of the 52 Rules of Engagement provides a breakthrough insight, they are consistently valuable and uniformly easy to put into action.

If you're looking for a book to tell you how to run an ad campaign or use web marketing, this is not the book for you. It's not a how-to-do book; rather it's a how-to-think book. How to think like a marketer and increase your rainmaking skills.

The book is clearly aimed at professionals and independents, but I think it has a lot of application for corporate-based marketers as well. Early on in the book, Fragasso stresses that neither marketing or rainmaking are God-given talents -- and his book succeeds at increasing the reader's skill level at both.

Product Description
You are a successful entrepreneur with a brain for business, but you're indecisive about marketing and need a guide that will help your company distinguish itself, inspire customer loyalty and increase profits. Marketing for Rainmakers: 52 Rules of Engagement to Attract and Retain Customers for Life presents practical concepts, helpful tips and real-life examples to help you take your business to the next level with marketing that focuses on the customers' needs. Fifty-two business-building ideas will inspire you to take immediate action and develop a marketing mindset.

From the Inside Flap
It's one thing to be great at what you do, but it's quite another thing to be able to convince customers of that fact. If you're a professional service provider, salesperson, or independent contractor, marketing is a critical ingredient in your company's success. Marketing for Rainmakers presents a collection of fifty-two business-building, loyalty-inspiring marketing ideas for anyone who wants to increase their customer base, improve customer relations, and make more money doing what they love to do.

Inside, you'll discover a wealth of tactics and strategies, practical tips, and real-life examples guaranteed to help separate you from the competition and build profitable long-term relationships with your clients. Fully practical and applicable to your small business, Marketing for Rainmakers shows you how to build a thriving professional practice using a marketing mindset based on intense customer focus.

Many professionals find marketing mysterious and tricky. Few people truly understand it. This book breaks good marketing down to its simplest goal-to motivate people-and shows you how to do just that. In fact, this straightforward marketing guide will turn you into a true marketing rainmaker-that person who can motivate customers and build long-lasting, profitable relationships with them.

Step by step, you'll learn to master the skills and attitude of a marketing rainmaker. If you're driven to succeed, Marketing for Rainmakers will show you how to make the most of every marketing opportunity and approach every aspect of your business with true dedication to your customers. Once you master the skills and attitude of a marketing rainmaker, you'll bring in more customers than you know what to do with-and keep them coming back for more.

1.Sure, the title says that it is a book about Adwords, but really it is a complete guide to overhauling your business.Yes, you'll learn more about the intricacies of how Google works, how to make Adwords work better and how to save yourself a ton of frustration in the process. But, more importantly, you'll be challenged on how you think about, plan for and execute your business.

2.Perry and Bryan are not huge fans of "Dilbert-Cube" environments (i.e. nameless, faceless corporations.)So, if you roll that way, prepare to be offended. This book is not for guys that have tens of millions of dollars in their ad budgets and are more worried about promoting their brand than getting sales dollars. This book is a must read for all the millions of businesses out there who need to drive customers to their shops, plants and agencies - now!

3.This is not a get rich quick book. What Perry and Bryan prescribe is a tough look at your business and a clear pathway to get the kinds of customers you want to be the kind of business you want to be.Don't expect to read this book, buy a couple of keywords and have money rolling in tomorrow. Those days are over. But, if you want to capture a sustainable, profitable niche, then this book needs to be in your arsenal.

There is one thing that bothered me about the book.It frequently changes tenses.Sometimes it's Perry writing, using "I" and then sometimes is Bryan writing, referring to himself as "I".It is a bit disconcerting and unclear who is writing, but it hardly detracts from the overall effectiveness.

So, if you'd like to keep some of your hard earned money from Google, and like to see your business become more stable, and make a ton more cash in the process, then read this book.
