Review of The Price of Pleasure (Paperback)

The taxi that she rides in as a passenger traveling the icy roads of Manhattan crashes leaving Erika Holland in a coma. Her last conscious thought focuses on the smiling face of friend Stuart Dunlap.

In her comatose state Erika thinks back to how she became a Manhattan call girl catering to the wealthy, promoted to a Madam, and eventually CEO of Courtesans, Inc.Erika was a contented spouse whose husband deserted her for Europe and his younger assistant. He threatened to cut Erika off from even child support if she failed to tow the mark.Innocently at first Erika found pleasuring men a delight that also brought in income.Though she can have almost any upper class male she chooses (for an evening) all Erika craves most in the world are the love of her daughter who hates and scorns her, and a smiling individual who deserves better than a fortyish hooker. She has neither as she lies in the coma.

As expected by an erotic tale, profanity and graphic sex scenes are as prolific as some of the charcaters are promiscuous. The story line is told in alternating dialogue, yet much of the plot is a cleverly designed first person account as the audience sees the "flashback" events through the relative eyes of Erika, an enlightened and delightful protagonist.Though the males seem so easily embracing prostitution to the point of matrimony and marriage proposals, readers will gain much pleasure (reading silly) from the entertaining The Price of Pleasure.

This is a good book to read if you want something not to dark and heavy with a little humor. Love Kate Austenand can't wait to read the next books in this series. Review of Voices From The Other Side: Dark Dreams II (Paperback)

VOICES FROM THE OTHER SIDE, edited by Brandon Massey, is a collection of short stories from many authors. In Eric Jerome Dickey's "Harlem," which is both scary and laugh-out-loud funny in places, an inmate in an asylum makes friends with one of his nurses and gets way too involved with her, seducing her and finally making a date with her. Brandon Massey's story, "Deadwoods," involves a huge tree that suddenly pops up in the yard of an unemployed suburbanite. What can he do to get rid of this evil smelling tree that harbors something frightening among its leaves? Brian Egeston's "Smoked Butt" is the story of a little girl delivering food to shut-ins. She has to travel through deep woods and her adventures are awesome and screamingly funny. In "Good 'Nough to Eat," Rickey Windell George, has an unemployed man seeking work wherever he can find it. Dancing in a male revue in a club is not his idea of a good job but it's all he can find. This tale has a shocking ending that will leave you gasping.

All the stories in the book were very good, each with its own shock value. Brandon Massey has put together a collection of stories - some funny, some horrifying - but all of them hold your interest and you find yourself wondering, as you read each one, how this particular one can possibly turn out. To the credit of the many writers, the end is always unexpected and sometimes downright zany. The writing style of Tananarive Due's "Upstairs" is reminiscent of Joplin's Ghost, while Terrence Taylor's "The Share" is heart wrenchingly realistic in a totally abnormal way. Maurice Broaddus, with his "Black Frontiers" brings us a taste of our lost history, along with Christopher Chambers' "Leviathan," a smooth reading but frightening story about the Middle Passage. It is a book worth reading if you like looking over your shoulder or peering into dark corners.

Review of Out Of The Dark: The Complete Guide to Beings from Beyond (Paperback)

I picked this book up and then set it back down without ever opening the cover, and it sat for a month.WHY?!

This is the first Brad Steiger book I have ever picked up, and I don't think I ever want to put it down again. He takes stories collected from the "Steiger Questionnaire of Mystical, Paranormal, and UFO Experiences" and bundles the most fabulous stories up into this book.

Here's an idea of what Brad Steiger dives into the depths upon:
Ghosts, burial grounds, ghostly echoes, apparitions, poltergeists, phantoms, bigfoot, sasquatch, the Patterson-Gimlin Film of Bigfoot, a bigfoot body cast, Florida's skunk ape, winged manimals (mothman, etc.), Nessie, a number of other lake and sea monsters, vampires, psychic vampires, Chupacabra, werewolves, werecats, wee people (fairies, sprites, elves, little vanishing people and trolls), Incubus, Succubus, human sacrificers, subterranean superhumans living in "abandoned" mines, Tommyknockers, aliens and Men in Black; and Steiger swears that they are all really here and really real! There is a photograph section that includes a couple of pictures of rods, but I did not see anything written up on them.

I have to say, overall, I think that the troll story was the worst; and makes it the #1 creature on my list to NOT run into! But, I did figure out that this book isn't all about "bad" entities, that some of them only are bad when you make them be.For example, give the elves a little portion of you lunch and dinner every day, and your house won't be infested by rats.

Deciding to be stupid, I finished this book at 3 o'clock in the morning while on my lunch break sitting in my car in the middle of a deserted parking lot.Don't do this!I was pretty okay with myself until I read the very last page, and that was enough for me.However, I know for a fact that this will not be the only time I read this book. It'll make a good reference for those scary stories on Halloween night 2002!

Well, to sum it up, you need this book if you're even *slightly* interested in weird stuff. It made a believer out of me, and I'm sure it will do it for you, as well.
