Review of X Saves the World: How Generation X Got the Shaft but Can Still Keep Everything from Sucking (Hardcover)

It's hard to be brief about reviewing the best recent book on Generation X. Gordinier's book is an update on the adult Xer and his forgotten place between the narcissistic Boomers and the clueless Generation Y--whom Karen McCullough labels as a group with a "much higher self-esteem than their abilities". Gordinier's book bluntly captures the essence of Generation X transitioning from its last coming-of-age moments in the 90s to its entrepreneurial spirit which brought influenced artistic alternative music and movies, the dot-com boom, Yahoo!, Wikipedia, Napster, Youtube, and Google.

Gordinier's writing smacks of sarcasm and in-your-face rhetoric, which is both honest and entertaining. His vocabulary and pop allusions are for those of us who are part of his Xer world. If not, see you you later. Gordinier's writing is a brief dip into nostalgic "Cooler King Moments" such as the arrival of Nirvana. It also lambasts the Boomers at Woodstalk '94 with descriptive passages, and recently their immersion into recycled Beatles nostalgia in Las Vegas. Gordinier also clarifies what it means to recognize kitsch--borrowing on the Czech struggles for freedom in the late 80s.

The first half of the book calls to me, as if it were my finally-discovered anthem. It is an instant classic, starting with the author's 1984 job at Laguna Beach selling ice cream and testing the awareness of tourists with indie alternative music. Pure hilarity! There are other anecdotes and moments that also pique the reader's interests, such as the bookend to the Xer's youth: an escape symbolically depicted with a 1999 Volkswagen Cabrio commercial to the tune of "Pink Moon." Gordinier's scene of a simple South Park neighborhood in San Francisco at the height of the dot-com boom is eerie.

However, the second half of the book begins to lag as the author seems to search for answers to his book's thesis. He uses trite examples such as a poetry bus, subsistence gardening, and a self-conscious and frustrating view of the Bush years. His language loses its luster and instead becomes preachy. Gordinier still makes fine observations, but some of them are politcally motivated--such as alluding to Barack Obama as representing the Xer cause (and forgetting that Obama's poetic rhetoric has yet to produce any kind of ideas or practical solutions that appeal to Xers. There is nothing to suggest that he will relate to the self-sufficient spirit of the Xer). Gordinier does provide one more humourous scene in which alternative artist, Moby, encounters a futuristically fried Brittney Spears. It's worth the moment.

Overall: 5/5 stars for the first half and 3/5 stars for the second half. The books is still worthy of 4 1/2 stars for its refreshing observations, its defiant tone and wit, and its dip into nostalgia. And even if my views are not necessarily one with Gordinier's, I give him credit for attempting to provide solutions for the dismal aspects of our society. I'll take that anyday over a politician's poetic nonsense and rhetoric.

I have to admit that I'm becoming addicted to the idiot's guides.Contrary to their title, they help experts and idiots alike. For thenovice, most of this material may be new, but even the expert can pick upsome great tips. The book is divided into the major office programs: Word, Outlook, Access, Powerpoint and Excel.Though individual books focusin more detail on each of these programs, there is certainly enoughinformation here to do the majority of projects that most people would beinclined to do.The great thing about these guides is that you willsuddenly find yourself unable to unlock a much higher potential of thesepowerful programs, particularly in Excel. The chapter on Excel is veryeasy to follow and teaches you how to do the most common formulas likeautosum.Even regular Word users will perfect the art of making tables, even for such common items as resumes. The format is extremely readableand easy to follow.I find that these guides only take a few hours toread, but the effects last for months.Highly recommended for anyone whowants a quick refresher course on the most common features of these officeprograms.

Review of Lonely Planet Dubai (Paperback)

This is the one and only good guide on Dubai. For the visitor to the worker it covers all aspects of life and pleasure, ranges of activities and budgets. Using this guide I managed to bargain my way into a budget of $40 a day, which certainly meant low range accomadation and eating, but this city is still definately kicking and worth a much larger 'splurge', after spending time in some of the neighbouring countries. Well worth the extra money then simply buying the UAE and Oman guide, or the middle east guide for that matter, if you plan on spending a lot of time in the city. The guide captures the essence of the place and truly prepares you on a realistic scale as for the weather, costs and atmosphere of Dubai. As usual there could have been more flowing information on getting there and away. The next guide should expand on day trips, especialy to the good beaches in the region, have a better variety of car rental information. As well check out some more of the cafe's in town, which is one of the few ways to meet locals and expats. Five Stars Five Stars.

Review of Osama Bin Laden's Personal Diary: 2003-2004 (Paperback)

If the man himself ever gets to read this book, it's going to upset him far more than any of the comments about him from the likes of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice. Because no one likes to be laughed at, and this book laughs at him long and loud. Fact is, if you want revenge on all the terrorists around the world, especially bin Laden and his overworked 'palm tree', then buy this book. It makes the whole lot of them look ridiculous - and that's no bad thing!

Product Description
Skulking in the caves along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, the world's most wanted terrorist passes his days playing Monopoly, watching The Simpsons and Sex in the City, safeguarding his tub of yoghurt from a thieving comrade, phoning Mummy in Saudi Arabia, planning his Memorial Library, and fantasizing about having a passionate affair with either Laura Bush (with whom he is totally besotted), Cherie Blair or, should all else fail, the wife of his best friend.

Bin Laden also has to cope with the stress of being hunted by US Special Forces, preventing his deputy from taking over as leader of al-Qaeda, fearing that he looks Jewish, and filming new video releases for his enemies. When he's not popping Valium, he spends time wondering if his arch enemy in the White House is as stupid as he seems-and deciding that he is.

This book-a fascinating mix of fact and fiction-shows bin Laden obsessing about internet pornography (using such sites to send encrypted messages), watching the Athens Olympics (which he doesn't bomb because he's desperate to see Ian Thorpe and the synchronized swimming), and even dreaming of one day eating at the Carnegie Deli and shopping at Neiman-Marcus.

Review of Raw Power: A Novel With the Heart of a Drive-in Movie (Paperback)

Fans of Perri Pagonis's first book, Blood and Popcorn will be delighted to see that his writing is just as funny as ever. They may be surprised however, because Blood and Popcorn was a gentle, even loving, look at mall rats of the Northern Virginia suburbs. This new book, however, is sited somewhat west of DC in the unreconstructed South of Nascar loving, pitdog fighting, moonshine swilling, dirty fighting, money-making, Yahoo culture of the rural fringe of his previous world. Violent, angry, sexy, and funny all at the same time, the book features Stephen King touches like slaughtered pitbulls miraculously brought back to zombiedom life to help redneck culture cliche Boo Smalls (who despite everything you gotta love) gethis revenge against the bar-keeping bitch and her two lovers, one male and one female, who killed his dogs in the first place. That is if the aging Mafia hitman from New Jersey, hired by the guy who lost his hand in the process of trying to kill the dogs in the first place, doesnt get to them first.
You get the idea. This has all the makings of next years hot grade B movie. Get it and read it before Hollywood does and the price goes up. This is a hoot and a half.

Review of The Alianthrope (Paperback)

Mr. Gangelhoff's magnum opus has caused a stirring success and with good reason. The Odyssean style narrative is in perpetual motion, engaging the reader at every turn to revel in the quirky, kinetic dance which is The Alianthrope. I liken the reading experience of The Alianthrope to the epic speediness of Philip K. Dick because, as with any of Dick's work, the visual construction of the words on the page encourage oculomotor coordinations to go into overdrive. I believe the locomotion of The Alianthrope and the reader's exercisedelineated above primarily motivate saccadic people, which is to say those who can effectively & with precision, give meaning to that strange French word, SACCADE, which describes the most elementary faculty that goes into reading. So when Mr. Gangelhoff says something in his own review of the book to the effect of, 'if you want to graduate from the ninth grade it may be a book worth looking into', he has a point, although one hopes the freshman has encountered things of this nature previously, as in perhaps the fourth or fifth grade.

In The Alianthrope we find characters cloaked in exquisite humor and mercurial impulses; everything is in a protean spin. Amongst a whirling salmagundi of humorous action and arcane references, we find that what at first appeared formidable and discouraging, in terms of language, has become fun and rather lighthearted. Mr. Gangelhoff is clearly not afraid to experiment with syntactical arrangements. Thus, for example, on page 299 Mr. Gangelhoff playfully employs a structurally unorthodox dialogue which bandies a mocking allusion to "postmodern verse" and carries with it a sense Derridian obloquy. Or perhaps obscenity.

Mr. Gangelhoff flips neologisms like a cook making a breakfast of champions might flip flapjacks. The reader is taken logo-dancing through the kitchens of Mr. Gangelhoff's new lexicon, a language spoken by a true logophile. In the book we find words like 'vaped'. We find examples everywhere of the author bending the parameters of the English language. On page 442 we can see such experimentation: "Yes, I've become the compleat anglophile," said Fandango. "A peon of Albion, I paean the pennons of Arthur! " Here the author is having homophonic fun with the language. The book is filled throughout with such linguistic fun. I intend to resume this review anon, and hope that it can be read as a benefit to those who have not yet had the ecstatic experience of The Alianthrope, but more importantly, that it be read by those who have and who know whereof I speak. This review is as yet in unfinished form.

Review of An Ordinary Life (Paperback)

From the first page, till the last An Ordinary Life is a wonderful book to read.I have someone in my own family struggling with cancer and I felt better knowing if a child of 15 had such courage so can I.I recommend this book to everyone of all ages. It is a touching story about a young man who cared so much for his grandparents and loved them dearly.

Product Description
'Bye Nonna,' I whispered again, and touched her arm just above the bed sheet. I gazed at her one final time, and like those summer days I spent memorizing her features and the sound of her voice, I studied her this time too. I felt I would soon need all those memories. I left the room not fully realizing this was the last time I would see her alive.

An Ordinary Life occurs between birth and death.

As he experiences the final days of his grandfather's life, author Charles J. Alaimo relives another painful chapter in his memory-the death of his grandmother, Nonna Maria, nineteen years earlier. Through her life, faith, and the courage with which she battles cancer, this simple Sicilian grandmother has a profound effect on her young grandson, changing his life forever.

An Ordinary Life gives us hope that, despite death, our loved ones remain with us, guiding us through life's journey.

Review of My Mother My Friend Forever (Paperback)

Betty Gonzales' book starts out with a total misrepresentation of the facts. Here is what she says happened "I received a call from my mother who lived out of state, to "come and get me now".Hearing the urgency in her voice I drove to California the very next day.She was waiting on the porch, wearing a flowered duster, looking a little disheveled holding her purse in one hand and a plastic bag of `clothes'with the other."

If Betty is willing to lie about this situation, how many more recounts of what happened could be fictitious?I am not sure. But as someone who actually knows the facts, my grandma was well cared for and loved by many in California, and to suggest otherwise is a complete falsehood. The situation Betty recounts is not at all how it happened. In fact, anyone who knows what happened would be appalled at this mischaracterization.I have no desire to recount the true story, it's too long and complicated, but suffice to say, I feel so strongly about this, I am not worried about liable, because what I am saying is the actual truth. My grandma was well cared for in countless ways.I hope Betty Gonzales, puts out a new edition of this book, which would possibly include what really happened, and how she really treated so many of grandma's loved ones.

Review of I Wasn't Born a Teacher (Paperback)

Gripping from the first page. Romance, blood, and poetry make this book a wild ride. Characters are vivid and their motives passionate. Review of Charley's Girl: A Mother and Daughter Remember (Paperback)

This book is written about my grandmother, and we were totally shocked when my aunt gave of copies of the published book. It is a wonderful testimony to the woman my grandmother is, and actually very enlightening.

Product Description
'Mary Ann Berry has given us a riveting story [that] transcends the everyday and reveals how one family has written its chapter in the fascinating story of America.'

William R. Gray
Retired writer, editor and publishing executive after 33 years at the National Geographic Society
Author of Legacy of the West

Charley's Girl tells the tale of a scrappy farm girl in central Oregon fighting her only classmate in front of their one-room schoolhouse-to a feisty octogenarian snowshoeing in Durango, Colorado. Along the way, Mary Alma Christy Sablich also recalls her more than fifty years spent in Chicago and its suburbs as worried wife, nervous mother, and grateful grandma.

Charley's Girl offers a dual-perspective on the life that Mary Alma and her daughter (author Mary Ann Berry) share as Berry listens, records, and remembers, too. This country was built on the backs of regular folks like the Christy family who rose to the task with common sense, healthy humor, and simple dignity. It takes courage to live an ordinary life, and Charley's Girl provides one example that has worked for almost a century.

About the Author
Mary Ann Berry earned her bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Wisconsin in Madison where she also worked as writer, editor, and adult literacy tutor trainer. She now lives in Durango, Colorado with her husband, Tom, and their dog, Dickens. Charley's Girl lives close-by.

Review of Casino to Die For: The Hunt for Tears of the Sun (Paperback)

Reviewing; Casino to Die For
I especially like the sometimes quirky, often warm and always real qualities you gave your characters.Your dialogues were purposeful and clear.I enjoyed Jim and Jennies' monologues. They brought out strengths and weakness we're all heir to.The story, moved at a fast pace while it simultaneously entertained and educated.
As I entered into the last 20 pages, I felt sad letting go of the people and characters with which I'd become involved.
Then an idea struck "When's the sequel coming?"

Janis Susan May's murder mystery Dark Music may start a tad slow, but it quickly builds up the pace and the intensity. Review of Antaeus (Paperback)

This book is the life of a teenager attending boarding school.I first bourht this book because the author (Ritchie Gillespie) was both my math and science teacher at an all boy boarding school. Reading the book, I found how I could relate to the character and how Mr. Gillespie could relate to us as students and to the character. Finding myself similar to the character, I enjoyed the book greatly.

Product Description
Struggle, sweat, bleed, fall . . . then rise stronger than before.

Attending a single sex boarding school in Virginia, Lee Mills is a student with powerful charisma. Going to a school where the boys are happy, but the sheep walk funny, Lee and his friends have their share of good times and mischief until a conflict between Lee and his English professor, Dr. Gilder, draws a line between teacher and student, casting the two into an ideological war.

Antaeus is a humorous story of the importance of life lived according to principles, and a demonstration of how even through a seemingly crushing defeat, there is victory for one who remains true to himself.

About the Author
Ritchie Gillespie is a graduate of both Woodbury Forest School and Hampden-Sydney College, two all-male schools. Knowing both the humor and the stress associated with boarding school, Ritchie Gillespie is ale to combine the philosophical narration of Ayn Rand with a dose of irreverent humor.

Review of Reflections in My Mind's Eye (Paperback)

As a person who hardly reads,I couldn't believe it the moment I realised I had started reading this book for the second time. The few stories in this book sum up to provide a summary of all that human life is practically about. Thus, the confirmation of the author's ingenuity and decision to write about everything is brought up.It's difficult to tell which of the stories is not a true one, though the author said some are not, because each story conveys a practical knowledge and account of crucial experiences in life.Since I read this book,I've been looking forward desperately to owning the author's next work to be published.

Product Description
My Mind's EyeAll the stories, the portrayals in Reflections are so honest and open, it seems to be too much for one to absorb. There are so many hard, sensitive, troubled and decidedly blunt characters to open up one's imagination. You take in vivid images of siblings realizing their differences, women in charge of their destinies and children in conflict. You get lasting impressions of a God- fearing man on a misguided mission, a teenage girl and her after school activities, and a young mother too afraid to leave her child alone. The illusions are just that, illusions to drift in and out of your subconscious. Little voices calling your name after ten to give you a little cheering up.

Review of Semiautomatic: A Novel (Hardcover)

I picked up this short crime novel 'cause I was in a rush and it had a nice blurb on the cover from George Pelecanos (one of my favorite writers). Well, haste definitely made waste for me, and I'm sad to report that Pelecanos gave me a bum steer. This story about a murder trial in Brooklyn is an utterly tepid and uninteresting piece of work. Part of the problem is that a lot of the backstory to the protagonist Giobberti, a 40-year-old homicide prosecutor for the District Attorney's office, resides in Reuland's debut, Hollowpoint. Apparently in that book Giobberti screwed up so badly that he was exiled in disgrace to the backwater of the Appeals Bureau. He also either then or subsequently lost his daughter in a traffic accident and his wife walked out on him. Now, some 18 months later, he is unexpectedly told to take over a routine case involving a teenager who killed a bodega owner in a stickup.

Already on the case is inexperienced junior prosecutor Laurel Ashfield, who's never tried a homicide. Most of the book revolves around Giobberti and her getting a feel for each other and the case. Almost immediately, Giobberti (and the reader) realizes there's something not quite right about the case, and it takes an awfully long time for the specifics to be revealed. Once revealed, the specifics end up being woefully uninteresting, revolving around the completely unshocking reality of cops and DAs playing fast and loose with the truth in order to put away bad guys in order to score political points. The theme of corrupt a corrupt legal system and bent cops has been exhaustively explored in film and fiction for over a century, and Reuland brings nothing new to the table here.

The author was himself a lawyer for the Brooklyn DA's Homicide Bureau, so the book does benefit from a certain authenticity of detail. Reuland is particularly strong in describing places and creating vivid mental images of the courtroom, apartments, bathrooms, offices, and so on. Unfortunately, the people moving through these spaces don't talk or think the way real people do. The dialogue tends to be so clipped and elliptical that one wonders if the author is trying to parody of pulp films. At one point Giobberti actually addresses Ashfield as "sister" and another character laughably tells Giobberti to "take your meathooks off me!" Worst of all, there's no suspense and no dramatic tension to be found anywhere in this entirely skippable book.

Review of The Lonely Planet Boy (Paperback)

This book begins as a slight little story about one young man's obsession with pop and rock. It's very British - it takes place in London, after all- and makes many references to early '80s musical artists that the modernreader might never have even heard of.Plus, the characters don't seem tohave much going on other than their musical preferences. But despite that,The Lonely Planet Boy is a pretty entertaining read.Plus, it's veryshort.Kip Wilson, a shy English youth, discovers rock chanteuse Mina (acombination of the VU's Nico and the lead singer from Missing Persons),writes a glowing review of her for the rock magazine that barely employshim, and soon enough both his writing career and Mina's rock career takeoff.Kip soon becomes nothing more than a slavish fanboy, obsessed withMina, even flying to the US out of his own wallet to cover her tour.It ishere in America that the first of the book's two shocking incidents takesplace; the way Mina shows Kip what she thinks of him was pretty jolting. The end comes rather quickly after this, and the second devastating acttakes place in the last pages of the book. These two incidents alonechange the entire tone of the novel, which started off as an almostnostalgic look at early '80s pop and music journalism, but ends as a grimreflection on the strange relationship between artist and fan, and how somefans can become slightly obsessed, even fanatical. It isn't the feel-goodbook of the year, that's for sure, but I got a few chuckles out of it.Ofcourse, I got a bunch of laughs out of Moby-Dick, too, so that's notsurprising.

Product Description
Kip, a lonely provincial boy, comes to London to enlist as a hack reviewer for a pop magazine and falls in love with Mina, a torch-singing vamp. When Mina's career takes off, Kip finds himself caught up in the general excitement, yet there is a mental and spiritual price to pay.

Review of A Critical Inquiry Into The Case Against Capital (Paperback)

In this important work, Larry Eubank presents a comprehensive (and extremely persuasive) refutation of the major tenets of Marxist Economics. Eubank shows, step-by-step, why everything the political left thinks it knows about the "evils" of capitalism is false.

An insightful work in the tradition of Milton Friedman, F.A. Hayek, and the great Julian Simon, THE CASE AGAINST CAPITAL is a must-read for any serious student of comparative economics.

Product Description
The purpose of this book is to show that Marx's central accusation against capitalism -- that it enables capitalists to become wealthy only through their exploitation of laborers, by extracting from them unpaid "surplus value" -- is a fallacy.

Most people today would probably assume that, with the Soviet bloc dissolved and the world's remaining Communist countries in a state of decay, a book on Marxist theory would be unnecessary.

But while Marx has been, in one sense, discredited by the collapse of the empire built on his theories, that doesn't mean his accusation against capitalist societies has lost all credence. On the contrary, his doctrines have continued to gain adherents in left-wing political and academic circles, and in a whole generation of anti-capitalist youth, at the same time that his new form of society has melted away.

This book attempts to unravel, point by point, the entire meandering, convoluted argument whereby Marx claims to make his case; and it pronounces that case a sham and a fraud.

The Case Against Das Kapital is a serious and well argued attack on Marx's economic thinking, and a very serious contribution to Marxist scholarship.

Review of Hanging Off the Edge: Revelations of a Modern Troubadour (Paperback)

Priscilla McLean invites us to share her life as a practicing composer/performer making a living by performing the music she and her husband write.I have seen the McLeans in concert and they are a force for good in our culture.By that I mean that they encourage us to stretch our boundaries of what is art and music while at the same time entrancing us.I only wish that their CD was available in connection with the book. However, the information on how to get the CD is, I believe, included with the book.I found the book inspiring and would be delighted to offer the McLeans a place to stay on their travels, a venu to present their works, and even to help pay for their visit.

Product Description
The next morning in Alpena, Michigan, lying exhausted in bed in yet another strange (but oh so familiar) motel room, I think about my life-our lives, Bart's and mine. Touring from town to town-no health insurance, no steady jobs, no children, no insurance of any kind against the dark forces in the world...

Hanging Off the Edge is an extraordinary journey into the mind and life of one of America's most creative women, Priscilla McLean. McLean shares her precarious cliff-edge existence as a classical avant-garde troubadour and the day-by-day tour of the world through Europe, Asia, and Australia. She also writes of her touching story, from growing up in a middle-class family fallen on hard times during World War II to her seemingly settled life as a college professor's wife. McLean's quotes from her extensive journals, kept over a twenty-five-year span of time, give an immediacy and poignancy to Hanging Off the Edge.

Mingled with these memories are original short poems, philosophical thoughts on the artist's life, and a whole section where McLean explores how, over the span of thirty-five years, thirteen special musical creations were born and placed before the world.

About the Author
Priscilla McLean has had a celebrated career as a composer, a world touring artist, a singer, and recently as a video artist. Born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, she now resides with her touring partner and husband, Barton McLean, in Petersburgh, New York.

Review of Dave Dangerous and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (Paperback)

I have been reading this book (Dave Dangerous and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse) as a chapter book to my kid's. I got so interested in it I ended up all night reading it for myself. The author has a quirky sense of humor that really reminds me of the old Monty Python shows. The book is definitely targeting younger people but the authors wry sense of wit and engaging writing style makes it enjoyable for adults as well. If you are reading to your kids at night like I do, this is a great book for the older ones that are getting more interested in chapter books.

Product Description

Upon overhearing a conversation about a kidnapping, Dave determines to find the victims.Joining forces with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (whose real names are John, Paul, George and Ringo) and Samantha, the most annoying girl in the world and niece to the missing persons, Dave embarks on a hilarious adventure where he has to, amongst other things, help win the most important soccer game of the year between two Goblin tribes, outwit an Ogre who has delusions of being an actor, survive a trek through the desert and ultimately save the world. Review of The Alukam (Paperback)

This is certainly one of those cases of don't judge a book by its cover. The cover art looks like a ten year old did it and does nothing to portray the quality of this story. This is an excellent police procedural novel that pits a police detective, who also happens to be an Orthodox Jew, against a cunning centuries-old serial killer.

This book was fascinating in all the details, and not just in the exploration of Judaism, both historical and modern. The author is obviously extremely well read and constantly adds interesting tidbits of information about almost everything. I learned a lot from reading this book like the fact that embalming fluid is bright pink, the difference between a clinical pathologist and a forensic pathologist, that you can tell an unmarked police car from the heavy duty locking gas cap. So much extraneous information, although all of it interesting, that the author came across as somewhat of a know-it-all trying to show off. Despite that, the book will certainly satisfy the lovers of Vampire fiction, adding an entirely new chapter to an already huge vampire mythology, and at the same time will intrigue the mystery lovers, with its realistic approach. The Alukam is certainly a book that vampire lovers don't want to miss.

Product Description
From 17th Century Poland to 1993 Florida, this fascinating novel seamlessly combines the matter of fact style of a police procedural with the horror and eroticism of the vampire. Drawn from obscure stories in the Jewish mystical tradition, The Alukam presents an entirely new type of vampire, one unaffected by crosses, sunlight, or any of the usual remedies, and who can rest in his coffin only on the Sabbath.

Review of The Adagio: A Mystery (Paperback)

Alan K. Austin has created a masterpiece. "The Adagio" is a well-written piece that takes the reader for a ride of a lifetime. A simple tale of a record containing a single misplaced note, a scream, weaves into an astonishing story of a man determined to prove his innocence.

Jack Duncan begins a casual affair with no clue of the drama that would result from it. With murder victims falling all around him, he must prove his innocence to the authorities and to his self.

This is a story that you will remember long after reading. It starts out with a bang. You may find yourself drifting off slightly in the middle, but hang in there because the ending brings everything together in a nice tidy bow, leaving you satisfied. This is an entertaining piece and I look forward to seeing more work from this talented writer.

Product Description
Jack Duncan likes women-even married ones. An amateur actor in 1960s Omaha, Nebraska, he's started a steamy affair with his married costar, Louise Thompson. But when her husband discovers them in flagrante dilecto, Robert Thompson takes a peculiar revenge on Duncan, giving him his prized recording of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings.

While listening to the record, Duncan is disconcerted by a scream he hears embedded in the climactic chord. And when he discovers the bodies of Louise and Robert, he knows instantly that their murders and the eerie recording must somehow be connected.

Duncan is suspected of killing the couple and becomes both the pursued and pursuer as he flees to New York City, beginning a hellish four-year mission to discover the source of the scream. He hides among derelicts near Shea Stadium, prowls Carnegie Hall where the Adagio was recorded, and learns of a strange, reclusive man who once lived in Carnegie's tower. Hunted by the law and his own past, Duncan has one chance to prove his innocence-if only he can stop the scream from echoing in his brain.

Lush with the language and attitude of the 1960s and 1970s, The Adagio is a gritty, hardboiled detective novel that will haunt you long after the last page is turned.

About the Author
For thirty years, Alan K. Austin has reported for PBS, Frontline, Nova, and CBS affiliates in Topeka, Kansas, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. His documentaries have won ten national Emmys, Peabodies, Dupont-Columbia, and Sigma Delta Chi awards. Austin recently tracked down his junior-high-school flame, and they currently live in Rogers, Arkansas.

Review of A Private State (Awp Award for Short Fiction) (Paperback)

Like E. Annie Proulx, Charlotte Bacon's writing is fresh and compelling, sprinkled liberally with incandescent imagery.Like Cheever, seemingly small events, like a weekend in the country, a troubling discovery made by a daughter in her father's apartment, or a whale-watching trip, all mark tidal points in the lives of her characters. With nary a false note, this young writer carries us through the lives of men and women facing the end of marriage, the beginning of a pregnancy, the repercussions of the loss of a job on a wealthy family.Such grace and assured prose is rare in young writers, and I'm already waiting for her next.An excellent collection of stories (and prize-winning, too, if you check the book jacket).

Review of One, Two And Even (Paperback)

His office assistant Mabel is on LAPD cop turned lawyer Jimmy O'Brien's case for accepting only pro bono clients like Henry "Buck" Simpson who is obviously going back to prison. That is until the sheriff's department informs Jimmy that he hung himself in his holding cell.Jimmy rejects suicide as the career criminal was upbeat and even looking forward to playing in a prison baseball game.He asks a favor of his pal Sol Silverman of Silverman Investigations who learns that Buck was stabbed three times.

Jimmy keeps digging into Buck's death while his associate Rita works a seemingly open and shut bank robbery case. That is until Laura calls Jimmy pleading for him to put on his halo as he did nine months ago.He rushes to her home in Beverly Hills, a long way from Van Nuys, to find her husband of six months Arnie Rosenthal, the meat packing king, dead with an apparent suicide note nearby.Detectives Corshank and Barnes find discrepancies that lead them to conclude homicide occurred and that the wife and her lover Jimmy did the deed.Though he has a paying client on the one hand for a change, Jimmy also realizes he must prove his innocence.

ONE, TWO, & EVEN is an entertaining legal thriller especially when Jimmy quotes precedence in courtrooms and challenges Corshank with rights. The exciting story line is also supported by a solid investigative subplot and a terrific secondary cast, but clearly this is Jimmy's tale.Fans will enjoy this fun novel and seek the previous O'Brien story, SIX TO FIVE AGAINST.

Harriet Klausner

In the second exciting and fast-paced Jimmy O'Brien series, One, Two & Even, Jimmy finds himself defending a beautiful ex-hooker accused of murdering her rich meat packer husband, Arnie Rosenthal, the Los Angeles hot dog king. County jail, was also reported as a suicide? O'Brien didn't think so, and now the Mexican Mafia was out to stop his investigation, stop it dead.

One, Two & Even takes the reader on a wild ride, traveling from the luxury of Bel Air and the stunning gold coast opulence of Newport Beach to the turbulent barrio of East Los Angeles, the meat packing district of Vernon, and even to an Island paradise twenty-six miles offshore, without taking a breather or pit stop along the way. Review of The Dare Island Enigma (Paperback)

A cautionary tale that runs the fine line between creationism and evolution, idyllic Dare Island becomes the setting of cataclysmic events that show what lengths the earth will go to maintain the balance of nature and the species upon it.

From the opening scenes of a growing friendship between two adolescent boys, it builds to an unimaginable climax that leaves you wondering why Dare Island and when the rest of the world will begin to find these unidentifiable masses, called globsters, washed up on its shores.

The next time you are beachcombing for starfish and shells, if you happen to see the tracks and the splitting of sand dunes as if a bulldozer has come out of the ocean, don't bother to run. It will already be too late ...

I enjoyed this book but would caution for younger readers due to violent content.

Review of My Life Closed Twice: Surviving a Double Loss (Paperback)

"My Life Closed Twice" is one of the best books I have read dealing with the anguish of loss of loved ones.In Ms. Schocket's case, the loss was a double one: husband and son within 24 hours. How anyone could cope with such a one-two punch is almost beyond comprehension. But Ms. Schocket does it superbly well - with courage, honesty, candor and completely devoid of self pity. What she has achieved is a book that provides great comfort to those who need both support and inspiration as they, too, travel a simliar road. There is very little in grief literature on double loss.Ms. Schocket's book is an important and essential contribution on that subject.
It is a "must" read for anyone who seeks a path to a meaningful life without their loved one.Having lost my own 36 year old son, I felt that someone had taken me by the hand and put a comforting arm around my shoulder after reading "My Life Closed Twice".Life goes on, albeit differently.Ms. Schocket's book shows us how and somehow puts it all in perspective.
