Review of Reputations Fade Away (Paperback)

By now the story told here has become a familiar motif in the ongoing internecine struggles of urban warfare in which "gang is pitted against gang," neighborhood against neighborhood," and in some cases (as this one), even family members against each other. This story is important not just because of its easy and much over wrought cover theme of "redemption of a lost soul through Christ," but mainly because embedded within and behind this familiar pretext remains enough truth in the underlying subtext of the book to decode the "Rosetta Stone" of urban violence. This not so well hidden code, the last remaining psychological barrier to understanding why there is so much "black-on-black" crime and violence, lies "hidden in plain sight" both at the center of this story and at the center of the tragic cycles of petty internecine warfare that for the last half century has provided the backdrop for a major part of the urban American social drama.

The strongest clue to this underlying secret is the uncanny way in which the "code of the streets" defines, dictates, utterly dominates and then ultimately undermines all "individual self-construction projects" of the life of young urban black men. Its centripetal force of peer group pressures, like an evil gravity in the ether, captures them at an early age, and then inexorably "pulls them in," by their noses, their Dicks, their spirits and their souls. And importantly, it does so well before they have had a chance to decide on healthier choices and alternatives, which, in any case, are, as often as not, missing in these diminished circumstances. Mr. Williams got an early start in his own "manhood self-construction project" and was already well on the ladder leading down into the urban social abyss and to his inevitable demise, by age seven.

Where the larger Culture Meets the Black Male Self-Construction Project

It is in the subconscious where the individual's self-definition and self-creation projects are hatched and where they eventually intersect with societal rules to help shape ones personality. Even though it is taking place in the background, it is at this vital juncture, this interface between the "individual mind" and "larger cultural rules and forces" where all the tension and action of the struggle for self-discovery is centered. And because self-construction is a "private affair," indeed a solitary project even for young kids, shaped mostly by peer pressure, intervention can often be next to impossible: Independence mandates that self-discovery be closed to too much external interference, assistance and teaching. Thus, it seems to matter little whether there is a strong or a weak parental figure, or positive or negative role models involved. The results are all the same: The "call of the streets" the theater of self-discovery for urban youths, is always stronger than the strongest of "role models," and stronger than all but the most determined parental authority.

Put simply, the real story here lays not so much in Mr. Williams' tale itself (which, meaning no disrespect to the author) we have seen repeated ad nausea. The real story lies in the psychology behind (beneath and between the lines of) his carefully woven "self-styled" autobiographical tale of his own urban heroics. His story of survival against society's grim reaper, and his eventual redemption through Christ is now the signature story of the urban ghetto denizen's rise from a mostly self-imposed "pre-determined failure" to "limited success through religion." It is now the familiar and expected tale of "the urban warrior's" struggle against "the man" or more accurately, against the recycled urban jungle that his own actions have helped to create and sustain.

Mr. William's tale is the archetypical version of this story: The hero begins by learning at an early age how to fight, then moves on to petty thefts and muggings, how to engage in risky and mindless sex, gets thrown out of several schools, learns how to gamble, stabs and gets stabbed (by his own cousin Tyson no less); shoots and gets shot (again by his own cousin Tyson), and on up the ladder to dealing drugs (following in his already jailed father's footsteps), and then as his life hangs in the balance, just before death or a lengthy prison sentence puts a natural or societal end to his climb, he has an epiphany: a "comes to Jesus moment" in which his life is miraculously turned around. Now the newly "saved" (like our lame duck President, GW Bush) also due to his own over night conversion, becomes the new recruit for Christ, a new "Proselytizer in Chief," and the new ever-wise and ever-self-righteous and morally superior "savior" himself.

The Rosetta stone: the "psychology of the missing hyper-masculine non-white male," reincarnated as the "Urban Hustler."

There is something eerily similar about the tales told here by Mr. Williams and by all the erstwhile "urban warriors like him:" from Johannesburg and Pretoria, to Rio and Sao Paulo, to Kingston and Marrakech, and from Detroit to Newark and LA, and back to Southeast DC. These "hero's tales" have identical shapes and themes: they are about actions designed to create and sustain a reputation as "self-created full men" in societies which only want "societally adjusted" and "psychologically (if not sexually) neutered" or "truncated men of color," men whose humanity is cut off and stops "just above the waist," and who are denied access to the things that could lead to normal societal respect and descent reputations. And thus these stories differ only in their inessential details -- whether they are told in the U.S., South Africa, Brazil, Portugal, Morocco or Kingston. They are all based on, and driven by the same Rosetta stone: the "psychology of the missing hyper-masculine non-white male model."

But it is clear enough for anyone willing to see it, that the psychology that is really at work here is indeed a kind of "false consciousness," rooted in the "imagined and urgently needed heroics" of the hyper-masculine black male image. Although only an image, The "Super-fly" Hustler is as real in its impact on the "code of the streets," and in its consequences on urban black life, and on black values more generally, as the "false psychology of the Western Cowboy" is real to mainstream white American boys and its corresponding impact on mainstream American values. It is just that the rough and stumble cowboy image on the one hand, is made to seem that it has redeeming positive qualities, while that of the hyper-masculine "Super-fly" non-white male, on the other hand, most assuredly is made to seem that it does not.

This symbol of the Hustler is the cultural answer to the deficiency, the gapping hole that lies at the center of the black male psyche. The "urban street Hustler" is the "Field General" on the urban battlefield. His image, that of the "hyper-masculine black male hero," is the psychological gestalt, standing in counter-position to that of the meek "societally adjusted neutered black male," which in any case is a wholly unattractive, unappealing and unacceptable hero to any young male of color struggling to become a "full," rather than a "truncated," or "psychologically neutered," man. James Baldwin has written about this phenomenon at length.

It is the image of the "Hustler" that is magnified beyond reason and that becomes a larger-than-life condensation symbol, one that serves to compress and then tries to integrate into the larger culture, all of the missing psychological elements of pride, ego, stifled sexual prowess and diminished societal status. Not accidentally, these just happen to be all of the same elements that a racist society works so relentlessly to deny and remove, both from the reality, and from even the image of the "the young criminal to be," black male buck. The crucible in which the "hustler's" image and psychology is created, incubated and nurtured is thus American racist society confined by racial segregation to the urban sub culture. It is a day-to-day grind, "being always on the struggle," the drama of tension against racism, poverty, over-crowdedness, alienation, harried and weak parental authority, and always weak disproportionately single mother-run families.

The cruelest of societal paradoxes is that black youths like Mr. Williams, when they engage in internecine struggles of violence, as they search vainly for the missing parts to their male psyches, are in actuality not so quietly engaged in a larger psychological conspiracy with the very racists who are bent on denying them their manhood: The more they kill each other, the more they lose their own self-respect and the respect they so desperately seek as individuals and as a group. And the more they fill up the morgues and the jails, the more they prove to their real enemies, the racists, that they are the wild animals who are un-deserving of the withheld parts of their missing psyches.

The urban battlefield is thus a vicious psychological circle without any redeeming qualities.

In the process of "becoming," that is, in the process of fashioning a life of which one can be proud and thus can become an assertive force and "agency" in defense of their own survival, young men of color have no choice but to elect to "become" through the false reality of their self-made heroes fashioned from their own self made sub cultural materials. Men of color cannot become, or even see themselves as "whole people" in the constricted leftover psychological space provided by racist white society. And as is typical of "missing" and "needy" psychological elements, both the individual and the collective ego, refashions the new hero into an exaggerated larger-than-life caricature of these urgent and vital needs. And from this we get the grotesque inversions of values, the mindless urban warfare, exaggerated preoccupation with sexual conquests, and a false feeling of invincibility. What is most assuredly at work in the psychological background of "Super-fly" is of course, self-hatred, the grand inquisitor of personal worth: If "we" lack those elements the white man has stolen from us, then it must mean we did not deserve them in the first place, right? Thus, there must be something wrong with us?We either are not brave enough, strong enough, masculine enough, or moral enough to fend for our own existence.

This thus becomes a vicious individual psychological problem that can only be solved at the level of culture. Thus enters the "street hustler:" The new "colored" urban cowboy, the buccaneer extraordinaire, the hyper-sexed woman killer, the psychological fixer of last resort, the "Mack," "Super-fly himself. The "hustler" is not just suave and smooth as silk, but also athletic, street smart and fearless, dressed to envy and to kill, with money to burn, packing heat and not in need of Viagra. And like all heroes, "the Hustler" too is an urgently necessary psychological fiction, an evil imperative called up from deep within a culturally deprived psyche and soul. Men fear the Hustler and all women want to make love to him. Amen.

This was the trap in which Dawayne Williams' tail was caught. And he is right, reputations based on a "false consciousness," do indeed fade away. But "false consciousnesses" can also have beautiful self-righteous faces too. Now he must see his new situation with his discovery of Jesus, as not an end in itself, but one in which the struggle continues, but this time with a "healthier self-concept," and a committed invisible ally at his side. With Jesus and self-knowledge now on his side, Mr. Williams must redouble his commitment and continue the struggle with even more zeal.

Five stars

Review of Every Demon Has His Day (Paperback)

Constance Plyd can't believe her husband, Jimmy, is dead. All she'd wanted him to do was sign the divorce papers but no, he put Tide in her dishwasher and then manages to get killed by a demon!Sheriff Nathan Garrett doesn't want to believe that Constance is responsible but she's the only witness to the murder. Is he letting his guilt over the past interfere with the investigation?Or is Constance's story true that a demon killed Jimmy and now the Devil intends to impregnate a ditzy virgin to bring about the birth of the Antichrist?Constance and Nathan will have their hands full as the situation is only going to get wackier....

Hilarious!Cara Lockwood had me laughing throughout EVERY DEMON HAS HIS DAY.From Jimmy's history of mishaps to the whole concept of a talking dog, the story is chock full of humor.Cara Lockwood keeps the tone upbeat, even as the world is crashing around Constance.

Constance is a great heroine. Her disbelief at the unbelievable events makes her all the more credible.I particularly love the distinguishing moniker of "Dead Jimmy" she uses for her now-deceased husband as it adds yet another bit of quirkiness to the tale. The romance between Constance and Nathan is sweet and builds over the course of the tale as both must learn to trust the other.EVERY DEMON HAS HIS DAY is a bit outrageous at times, but that is part of the fun.Easily recommended!

Review of Have Glove, Will Travel: Adventures of a Baseball Vagabond (Paperback)

I was going to rate this book three stars, but the book rallied in the last few chapters.I was not interested in reading about Bill Lee's adventures around the world as it applied to drugs and other hell-raising escapades. He was put on baseball's black list after going AWOL during a game with the Montreal Expos when a friend of his was unfairly, according to Lee, released. There is a wonderful chapter on the conversation he had with Ted Williams.Williams, of course, claims he made a living off of dumb pitchers. However, Lee challenged Teddy Ballgame by saying he could tell him one reason Williams was such a good hitter that Ted wasn't even aware of.The skeptical, but curious, Williams decided to hear what Lee had to say. After having Williams conduct a simple experiment involving his eyes, Lee made a believer of Williams in regard to which of Williams' eyes was the dominant one.Lee genuinely loves the game of baseball as has previous generations in his family. In fact, his aunt, Annabelle Lee, was a professional ballplayer for nine seasons as the ace left-hander for several women's baseball teams during the 1940's.Her uniform hangs in the Baseball Hall of Fame. For Lee to continue playing wherever a ballgame can be found shows he has a genuine love for the game. There are some very funny anecdotes that will be fun to pass on to others.I give the book four stars rather than five, due to a lot of the aforementioned mischief stories involving drugs and alcohol. The last forty pages, however, make this book a worth while read.

Review of No B.S. Ruthless Management of People and Profits: The Ultimate, No Holds Barred, Kick Butt, Take No Prisoners Guide to Really Getting Rich (Paperback)

I've been reading Dan Kennedy's stuff and attending his seminars for years but I have to say I was shocked at how blunt this book is. Kennedy won't make any friends among employees (and vendors) who don't understand that they are zebras (you'll have to read the book to see what that means) and that the sole reason that the person running the show (biz owner) has a business in the first place is to make a profit.

Kennedy has little time for whiners who complain that the minimum wage isn't high enough or that employers should learn how to "handle" persnickety employees so that the employee "feels good."

Rather, Dan's blunt point is that business owners take too much crap from employees and their crying and as a result, are being robbed blind by most of them.

When you start to read this book you'll probably say "well, this doesn't happen in my business" but as you go through the book, detailed example by detailed example, I can guarantee that you (biz owner) will see yourself and one or more of your employees/vendors somewhere.

The book is not all negative. In fact its filled with great ideas to get maximum productivity out of those who you choose to allow to work with you. It all starts, though, with remembering that the only reason that you should be running a business is to make a profit for yourself. Start there--otherwise go get a job and work for someone else.

With that as the premise, why in the world would you let your employees steal anything from you. He's not just talking about a case of Coke out of the bag room, or something obvious as money out of the drawer (though he does have examples in the book of that) but stealing your money by being unproductive (or worse--like actually trying to bury your business.

I recommend this book 100% for all business owners, but especially those small business owners. It comes with a CD which is a very good interview that Lee Milteer did of Dan Kennedy about Ruthless Management of People and Profits.

I do think that some folks will be fired after the boss reads this one..but Dan has recommendations for them, too. Like: get more education, hang out with winners; understand that while there is no place like the United States for opportunity, the world owes you NOTHING.

Review of The Last Good Season: Brooklyn, the Dodgers, and Their Final Pennant Race Together (Hardcover)

Even though I was only five years old when the Dodgers left Brooklyn, I always had a fond spot in my heart for the team. I collected Brookyn Dodger yearbooks over the years. This book, by Michael Shapiro, brought out many interesting facts which I did not know, such as it was only at the end of the season did the Dodgers actually sell out any games.Even though Ebbets Field only held 32,000 I assumed there were several sell outs during the season.Yes,the Dodgers were profitable but O'Malley was a business man and saw (like the Braves) he could makesignificantly more money.Knowing that area of Brooklyn, that if the stadium was built in 1957 and the teams which would have included Koufax and Drysdale they would have succeeded greatly. Also, the book points out the relationship between Robinson, Campenella and Newcombe. I was not aware of the relationship between the three. I could not believe Newcombe left Ebbets Field, after getting knocked out of the 7th game of the World Series.Yanks start Johnny Knucks against the leagues MVP and Cy Young winner and Newcombe gets knocked out and leaves the Field.I found it incredible that the day after the World Series the team leaves for Japan.I wonder how todays players would react. I wonder why Rachel Robinson declined to be interviewed by the author, I believe she could have added greatly to experiences at Ebbets Field and Brooklyn in the 1950's.I enjoyed the part when Sal Maglie first came to the Dodgers and his reception in the clubhouse. The best part was describing Brookyn in the 1940's and how it was transforming in the 1950's.I read the Boys of Summer many years ago, but this book by Michael Shapiro is clearly superior.I would recommend this book to any baseball fan from that era, especially Brooklyn Dodger fans. Both O'Malley and especially Robert Moses are the real villians here.

Review of One Thing or Your Mother (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) (Mass Market Paperback)

Reading BTVS One Thing or Your Mother is like watching an episode of what I consider "Classic Buffy". The story takes place during the second season of Buffy, after Episode 19 ("I Only Have Eyes for You") and before the season finale (Episode 21 & 22 "Becoming"). Angel has lost his soul, murdered Jenny Calendar, and begun to wage his emotional war against Buffy.

Like a TV episode, there is a main plot (why is everyone in Sunnydale continually falling asleep, how is Principal Snyder connected, and how can Buffy put a stop to it before everyone falls into permanent slumber?), and a small subplot with Angelus, Drusilla & Spike (still in the wheelchair). The theme of the sub-plot also ties in with main plot's theme. There are a few surprises, and there is some foreshadowing of both events in "Becoming" and the Third Season of Buffy.

I really enjoyed the story and recommend it to any Buffy fan looking for a good new story to excite their imagination.Kirsten Beyer has a great feel for both the characters and the story flow, and it's a shame that this is probably the only BTVS story we'll be able to read of hers.

Product Description
It's tough being a teenage Slayer. On the verge of failing her junior year -- thanks to annoying Principal Snyder, who seems to be acting even stranger than usual lately -- Buffy agrees to meet with a tutor. Not helping her studies is the fact that lately she's been exhausted, waking up each morning feeling more tired than she did the night before.

To make matters even worse, she's tasked with investigating the disappearance of a child...a little girl who happens to have gone missing mere hours before a child vampire surfaced in Sunnydale, accompanied by a wheelchair-bound male who fits Spike's description perfectly.

Fighting off exhaustion and uneasy at the prospect of staking a child vamp, Buffy learns that Principal Snyder is the target of a sleep-deprivation spell that has taken over Sunnydale. Putting aside her fear that her tutor is out to get her, and hoping that the sleeping spell is affecting both humans and demons, Buffy investigates Snyder's odd behavior. She follows him to his childhood home to discover that he has arranged to have his abusive mother banished to the demon dimension. Meanwhile, Drusilla, who has been playing mother figure to the child vampire, is learning how difficult it is to be a parent. As sleep takes hold of the citizens of Sunnydale, Buffy begins to realize that unless she breaks the spell soon, the nightmare is just beginning.

Review of Mom Said Kill (Pinnacle True Crime) (Paperback)

I have been criticized for writing what appears to be book reports and spoiling murder mysteries. Unfortunately, the true crime books are all about real people and the truth is out there regarding the circumstances of their crimes. The title says a lot about the Barbara Opel case who is also a prime candidate for the worst mother in the world regarding the Jerry Heineman case in Everett, Washington. Burl Barer is an excellent true crime reporter who prefers to write about crimes that don't always get much media attention. Maybe because this group of characters would be more appropriate on the Jerry Springer Show than anywhere else.
Barbara Opel is quite a manipulator, con-artist, and quie frightening to her own children. Her case is one on par with Diane Downs easily involving a murder for rich scheme which backfired so badly that it is almost laughable except for the victims involved.
Barbara Opel robbed her children of a lot more than just a normal, stable childhood and loving environment. She brought them into this world to use them in her own schemes for quick money no matter who it hurts.
After all, she allowed her thirteen year old daughter, Heather, to have sex in her own home with a seventeen year old boy who she recruited for her crime.
This case reminds me of the Gertrude Baniszewski case in Indiana where she used the neighborhood kids to torture her young boarder. Fortunately, Barbara Opel was never bright enough to carry out the scheme herself but used her own children which should have been taken away by the state children's services long before they were harmed not only physically, psychologically, emotionally, and sexually by their own mother.
I recommend reading this true crime book because most of the books out there are repetitive and redundant with the same stories that you are actually comparing which writer is better at grasping the whole story.
Burl Barer doesn't write about those cases but writes about the familiar environment of Washington state.

Product Description

It's Christmas time, and Judith Flynn has decided that she and the neighbors on her cul-de-sac should celebrate by decorating their houses.Eveyone thinks it's a great idea except for the crabby Enid Goodrich who seems to be lacking in Christmas spirit. She has been a detriment to the neighborhood for some time and it's hard to find genuine sympathy among her neighbors when she is killed with a hatchet just before Christmas.Of course this means that there are lots of suspects because Enid has offended almost everyone she has come in contact with. This includes her rather unsavory relatives who dislike her as much as everyone else.Judith and her cousin, Renie, do their usual sleuthing job and Judith finally comes up with the identity of the killer. This is enjoyable reading for fans of this genre.

Review of Finn (Paperback)

If it hadn't been for lunch, I would've finished FINN without a break this past Sunday. As it was, it took me just that single day to ride through this fast-paced, scenic series of unforgettable adventures. The waterfall scene, for example, was a peaceful and calming interlude smack in the midst of an underworld of grime and crime, and was, quite literally, a cool episode. Another superb scene was the one near the end with King D. What an odd but memorable environment that surreal character created for himself. And when James was steering Finn and Silvia around the debris of his life, I felt such a sense of immediacy that I wouldn't have been surprised to look up and see him right there in my living room, doing his street dancing between the chalk marks.Chloe Wilder, a fast-thinking and resourceful girl toughened up by a week of unanticipated exploits, still reminded me of many of my female friends. Though vulnerable, she desperately tried to hide her vulnerability. And, with that mask on, she brushed up against a rough world seemingly not far from her own fairly comfortable existence, but in fact a world away. FINN will appeal to teen readers -- male and female -- wherever jagged cities give way to seemingly smooth suburbs.

Review of 1,001 Ways to Keep Customers Coming Back: WOW Ideas That Make Customers Happy and Will Increase Your Bottom Line (Paperback)

Ever since The Loyalty Effect was published, companies have come to understand that it is usually far more profitable to keep existing customers than to acquire new ones.Since companies usually focus more ongetting the new ones, that left a problem for executives:What are goodways to retain customers?

The book vaults into the gap by addressingmajor areas like creating a better bundle of products and services (offerstamps in a card shop in a tourist town like Williamsburg where the postoffice has long lines), add incentives (free gifts, coupons, rebates, special financing, and contests), tap into or build communities ofinterests (like those who love Harleys), building trust by standing behindyour work (deliver what you promise and make good if you don't), give firstin order to receive (this often means helping a charitable purpose withsome of your proceeds), reward all customers as though they are your bestcustomer (with a smile, recognition, respect, etc.), treat your bestcustomers even better (they account for 80 percent of profits and therearen't very many of them), make it easy (automatic reorder andreplenishment), go to your customers, personalize what you offer to yourcustomers, and become a champ at customer service.

These are all validconcepts, and seeing 100 or so examples of each point makes it easier toimagine how to apply these principles to your own business. That's thestrength of the book.

My only quibble was that it seemed like theexamples pretty much came from the same companies in each area.I think Inow know more about Merrie Maids than I really need to know, and a lot ofthe examples are pretty obvious.Usually books of lists have more varietyand more intriguing examples.

Perhaps this limitation is just becausethis subject hasn't been thought about enough.I hope the authors comeback with an update on this book in a few years with zingy examples thatare based on things you, the reader, have developed as a result of studyingthis book.

May you have irresistible success in keeping your customers!

Review of Podcast Solutions: The Complete Guide to Podcasting (Paperback)

Of particular interest to me were the production and post-production chapters, but if you're interested in starting your own podcast and want to learn the smallest of details without being or feeling bogged down with a lot of information this book is for you.

Geoghegan and Klass are two experienced podcasters who put out high quality podcasts. They take you pretty much step-by-step on how to obtain third-party podcasts (which they rightly suggest you should listen to to learn how others do it), from downloading tools and Web sites of interest. They provide detailed information on the types of equipment you need, from a simple mic plugged into your computer to mixers and other hardware you may wish to have, and how to use them effectively for your podcast. They go into great depth into how to record your podcast effectively by setting levels and using your equipment properly, and how to edit and improve your sound quality, all the while warning you on the little pitfalls that can make your podcast difficult to listen to. They also tell you how to get your podcast on the Net, from registering your own domain and finding hosting (or using services such as Blogger), as well as how to set up the extremely important (to podcasting, at least), RSS feed. You are even given advice on how to make money as a podcaster.

There is also a CD included with a number of excellent trial versions of a variety of software for both Mac (OS X) and Windows which can help you get started in your podcasting venture.

The material plus the CD really make this an excellent, insightful purchase well worth the price of the book. Kudos for Geoghegan and Klass for crafting a wonderful book that will aid the novice (and slightly experienced podcasters like myself) into making well-produced podcasts.

Review of Dreams of Sleep (Contemporary American Fiction) (Paperback)

i loved this book, especially the characterization of Alice. She makes me feel normal, with her strange outbursts and feelings. She's a woman who goes by omens, including what's carved by strangers' fingernails on afrozen package of chicken. She strangely salivates as she picks at herdaughter's head for scalp buildup. This isn't all what the story's about, but i just couldn't put the book down. Josephine makes each of the threecharacters a star for one chapter, so you can really get inside their headsand receive information that the other characters don't know. It's abouthope and despair and human relationships, the darkness of marriage and thelight at the end of it. I loved how Alice follows Claire around, almoststalking her that way, like the wife does with the other woman. i like howshe smokes just as it gets dark, when she feels the most despair. i reallyrelated to alice. i think josephine is a very gifted writer.

Product Description
Alice Reese knows that the cheerful sounds of her family eating breakfast mask a ten--year marriage falling apart. As Alice and her husband, Will, struggle to understand--and perhaps recapture--the feelings that drew them together in the first place, their interior lives are sensitively and convincingly explored.

With disarming wit and a refreshing personal transparency, Pleiter tackles both the "whys" and "hows" of this transition that strike at the very core of a woman's concept of self, of accomplishment, of worth. Becoming a Chief Home Officer constructs a fresh new "benefits package" for the profession of motherhood and offers a wide array of practical advice from "labor relations" in averting strikes and tantrums, to new perspectives in seeking "raises, praises, and promotions."

Three distinct audiences will find help and hope in these pages: the working woman considering this transition, the newly-at-home mom adjusting to culture shock, and the "approaching burnout," been-home-awhile mom struggling with frustration or dissatisfaction. Pleiter's witty admission of mistakes and mishaps evokes knowing grins and empathetic laughter to punctuate her wonderfully practical advice.

Review of Three One-Act Plays: Riverside Drive Old Saybrook Central Park West (Paperback)

These are not terrific comedies about infidelity. For the long-term Woody Allen fan, they will not reveal a desire on Allen's part to explore significantly new thematic material.

For whatever reason, Allen has in recent years revived his interest in theatrical writing (many years ago he had hits with "Don't Drink The Water" and "Play it Again, Sam"; the short plays "Death" and "God" were included in his collections of New Yorker pieces). There are other (dramatic) plays that have not yet appeared in print - "The Floating Lightbulb" (circa 1980) and "A Secondhand Memory" (2004).

"Central Park West" is the least interesting of the three newer plays included in this handsome paperback. It originally appeared in 1995 on a triple bill called DEATH DEFYING ACTS with one-acts by David Mamet and Elaine May. It anticipates a love-quadrangle scenario Allen would explore more effectively in his film "Deconstructing Harry" (1997) - that of a man leaving his wife not for his long-term mistress but for another, much younger, woman. Of course, the mistress initially thinks she is the one with whom the husband will be running away.

The play is, I guess, meant to be a kind of satire of rich New Yorkers. It doesn't really come off. One must resist temptation to seize upon this line and turn it against its creator -

"You're a failed writer, Howard - judging from the characters you create you shouldn't even be a writer - you should be in the cardboard business."

(For a laugh, and an insight into the pains of a director who must deal with the whims of three playwrights, check out the diary of the director that was published in the New Yorker in 1996.)

WRITER'S BLOCK was presented as a double-bill directed by Allen in 2003. "Riverside Drive", the best play in the book, focuses on a cheating writer who, while waiting to meet his soon-to-be ex-mistress in a secluded spot by the Hudson, is harrassed by a mentally unstable homeless writer. The action goes on to revisit shades of the Martin Landau plot of 'Crimes and Misdemeanors'.

"Old Saybrook" is similiar to "Central Park West" albeit with a post-modern twist. Halfway through this play about cheating couples in Connecticut, we discover these characters are actually characters from an abandoned play by a playwright named Max Krolian ("It's dark in the drawer," explains one character). Krolian joins in on the action to try to figure out an ending to the play.

Product Description
Three delightful one-act plays set in and around New York, in which sophisticated characters confound one another in ways only Woody Allen could imagine

Woody Allen's first dramatic writing published in years, "Riverside Drive," "Old Saybrook," and "Central Park West" are humorous, insightful, and unusually readable plays about infidelity. The characters, archetypal New Yorkers all, start out talking innocently enough, but soon the most unexpected things arise-and the reader enjoys every minute of it (though not all the characters do).

These plays (successfully produced on the New York stage and in regional theaters on the East Coast) dramatize Allen's continuing preoccupation with people who rationalize their actions, hide what they're doing, and inevitably slip into sexual deception-all of it revealed in Allen's quintessentially pell-mell dialogue.

Review of The Collection (Mass Market Paperback)

Bentley Little has done it again! This collection of short stories is an absolute must have for anyone interested in this hilarious author's writings. Little's stories are a deft mix of humor, horror, and weirdness that are an excellent way to pass a few hours. I am continually amazed that many people fail to grasp the humor in this man's novels and stories. Little is a master of black comedy and satire (or as he refers to it in several of his stories here, "slightly exaggerated" situations).

I don't think it is helpful to go through a story-by-story analysis. Since many of the stories in "The Collection" are very short, an in-depth analysis of them would undoubtedly give away crucial plot information. I'll try to touch on a few recurring themes that Little revisits more than once.

Little has an interesting view of history. This theme caught my eye because I have a degree in history, and enjoy reading and studying the topic. Two stories are notable with this theme. The first, and the one story that made me buy the book, is "The Washingtonians." A man finds a letter written by George Washington in a relative's trunk. The letter discusses eating children and making tools out of their bones, and is judged to be authentic. When the man visits a local university, he finds out that history, as we know it, is a total sham concocted to keep people in line and present a positive image of the powers that be. It is sufficient to say that by the time you reach the end of this story, you'll see a whole new meaning to the phrase, "the British are coming!"

The second story with this historical theme is "Colony." A newly elected president finds out that America isn't what it appears to be. Let's just say that the Declaration of Independence is a facade to placate the people. The president, with the help of Nixon crony H.R. Haldeman (who turns out not to be dead, just in hiding), stages a new war for independence.

These two stories highlight Little's pessimistic view about accepted knowledge. Knowledge is often not a set of rigid facts or figures, but something softer and hazier that can be manipulated by people for whatever goals they desire. Sometimes, historical lies cover up something that can be truly terrifying.

Another theme in the book is his humor, especially in satire. The story that best fits this rubric is "Confessions of a Corporate Man." In this brilliant gem of a tale, Little viciously skewers corporate America's attitude of competition. Disagreements between various departments in a company turn into full-blown wars involving murder, sex, and betrayal. It is bloody, but screamingly funny, as anyone who works (or has worked) in an office will quickly accede. Another tale, "Life with Father," shows us what happens when recycling is taken WAY too far.

The humor isn't just satire, sometimes it is as black as the coffee at an AA meeting. Just check out "The Show," about a snuff theater where the victim on stage might be someone you least expect. Then there is "Pillow Talk," a short tale about pillows who want to share their lust. How about a story about a dwarf who is determined to collect a quarter? It's here and it's funny.

Then there are the straight horror stories, scary stories that make you look over your shoulder. Take a glance at "The Woods Be Dark," a gruesome tale set in the South. The final tale, "The Mumurous Haunt of Flies," is another shocker about a strange bathhouse on a farm that tells us more than we need (or want) to know about death.

There are other types of stories included in this collection, and a reader is sure to find something that tickles their fancy. I'm quickly discovering that Bentley Little is a brilliant author who can write any type of story. I'm looking forward to reading "The Mailman," and "The Association." Actually, I'm looking forward to reading all of his books, and I hope you will, too.

Review of Forcing Amaryllis (Hardcover)

The last time I was so excited about a first-time mystery writer, I was reading Jonathon King's The Blue Edge of Midnight, which went on to win the Edgar Award for best first novel.Forcing Amaryllis by Louise Ure is a powerful novel, with a fascinating protagonist.

Calla Gentry is a trail consultant in Tucson, a woman who only served as a consultant on civil cases because she was afraid to deal with criminal cases.Seven years earlier, Gentry had been a strong woman who worked in advertising. But, that was before her sister's brutal rape at knife point.Calla lost her sister, Amaryllis, when her failed suicide attempt put her in a coma.Calla also lost her own confidence and sense of security.Amaryllis' rape incapacitated Calla so much that their aunt told Calla she needed to take her life back. She told her, "Just like Amy.It's a life of suspended animation."

When Calla's boss forces her to take on a rape/murder case, she is struck by the similarities between that case and her own sister's.Together with two friends and a private investigator, Calla attempts to link other rapes with Amaryllis'.The descriptions of the rapes, although not graphic, are not easy to read. The jury selection process in the book, and the trial itself are fascinating. But, it is the change in Calla's character, as she forces herself to move out of her safe surroundings, that is the most fascinating.

Give Calla a chance. In my opinion, Forcing Amaryllis by Louise Ure deserves to be nominated for this year's Edgar for best first mystery.

Here, he collects some of today's most popular pick-resistant locks and sets out to see which ones hold up to their claims. However complex a lock gets, it must be durable, dependable and user-friendly. It has to be tough enough to endure physical attack, but it can't be machined too tight or it will jam up with just a breath of dust. It must be simple and easy to lock and unlock with its key, or the customer will not pay the higher price for it. It is this delicate balance between security and utility that allows the locksmith to open this new generation of locks. Hampton shows locksmiths how each lock is picked and how long it will take. He details the tools of the trade and includes patterns and instructions for making your own picks and tension wrenches. He even includes ancient Tibetan Buddhist tantric visualization exercises to help locksmiths learn to "see" the inner workings of the lock within the mind's eye. Veteran locksmiths or those new to the trade will find Hampton's latest book an invaluable sourcebook. For academic study only.

Review of Strange Nervous Laughter (Hardcover)

Although this charming little novel begins with a robbery that brings three of the six protagonists together, the theme is undoubtedly the vagaries of love: "Human nature is the source of all bad romantic comedies." In the unlikely pairings of a group of eccentric characters, the author explores the many faces and detours of romantic love. The city of Durban, South Africa, is immersed in the hottest summer that anyone can remember, the nights as humid and steamy as the ongoing dramas between disenchanted lovers. And what a rogue's gallery McNulty has provided: Beth, cashier in a neighborhood grocery compelled to save every man she falls in love with, thus perpetuating a constantly shattered heart; Pravesh, an undertaker, appearing at first the perfect boyfriend, unsure of himself and hiding a rather kinky fetish.

Aisha is a dreamer who floats through the world without direction; and Mdu has communicated with whales since childhood, half a man waiting to become part of a whole. Then there is Harry, collector of everyone's cast-offs, separated from loving parents by their untimely death. Perhaps the most complicated of all is Meryl, who has armored herself against the emotional pain of failed romance only to meet the perfect man and be blinded to his charms by her fear. In a blend of magical realism and black comedy, these tortured lovers stumble through the painful stages of romance, from euphoria to boredom, from terror to submission, from selfishness to fulfillment. For all its whimsy, there is a strong element of truth in these strange pairings, the urgency of connection to another human being, for approbation and acceptance, for completion.

As unique as the South African city where a steamy summer yields unusual couplings, each character is riddled with flaws and self-doubt, with hubris born of ignorance and frustration born of desperation. One cannot help but be enchanted by the prose of this talented writer, her imagination as fresh and vibrant as the ever-changing landscape of lovers at odds with one another and with fate. The most defiant and stubborn are brought to their knees by love's demands in a flavorful, spicy stew of false starts and leaps of faith. Luan Gaines/2009.

Review of Christietown: A Novel About Vintage Clothing, Romance, Mystery, and Agatha Christie (Cece Caruso Mysteries) (Paperback)

Cece Caruso's latest project is a biography of Agatha Christie.Unfortunately, her publisher seems to think it needs more work.Specifically, Cece is told to beef up the section on Agatha Christie's mysterious disappearance during December of 1926.She has a little over a week to rework that section and get it back.

As if Cece doesn't already have enough on her plate. She's supposed to be planning her wedding to Detective Peter Gambino and a baby shower for her daughter. Her ex-husband and his new fiancee are in town for that last event, causing more conflict in Cece's life.Additionally, she's in charge of the opening day festivities for Christietown.

Christietown is a retirement community based around the works of the famed mystery author. The subdivision resembles a small English town complete with Vicarage and Pub.

Unfortunately, the play doesn't go well when the woman set to play Miss Marple disappears only to turn up murdered by poison. Is someone going too far with the Christie theme? Why was the woman murder?

This is another book that will please Cece's many fans.Cece and her family and friends are always fun to spend time around, and this book is no exception. The main mystery seems a bit slow at times due to the various sub-plots, but for those who love the characters, this isn't an issue at all.Along the way, we get snippets that offer one theory on what really happened during Agatha's real life disappearance.

Cece never fails to entertain, and this book is no exception.

Product Description

For the grand opening weekend, Cece is staging a play featuring the beloved sleuth Miss Marple. Of course, everything goes wrong, including a leading lady who ends up dead.

All is not well in Christietown; its secrets are as complicated as the truth behind Agatha Christie's real-life disappearance. Review of Property Of: A Novel (FSG Classics) (Paperback)

Alice Hoffman has became my favorite author over the years but upon rereading this one, I found it to not have the character development and detail that I enjoy in her later books. The unnamed protagonist-narratorseems much too bright and together to fall into the trap of drugs andgangs. This book would not be out of place among the young adult fictionof authors such as S.E. Hinton.A good cautionary tale for dissassociatedteens.

Product Description

When Property Of was published in 1977, Kirkus Reviews described it as "that precious commodity, the first novel of great promise." In telling the story of a young outsider who is obsessed with her gang-leader lover but unwilling to commit to becoming one of "the Property of the Orphans"-the tough girls who belong to the boys on the avenue-Alice Hoffman explores hard truths about how difficult it is to love another, and yet how much more difficult it is to pull away.

Review of Crooked River Burning (Paperback)

Here's that rare animal -- a hugely ambitious novel in which the ambitions of the author are hugely realized! Winegardner has got it down bigtime! His depiction of Cleveland (I speak as a long-alienated native) is as good as it gets and his blend of real people and fictional protagonists really works. He made me care deeply about his two leads characters, drew them so well I felt I knew them. I cannot fault his writing, his concept, his delivery in any way. I only wish this book were better packaged in terms of cover art, to attract the readers it so richly deserves. If you think Cleveland is a bore or a joke, when you finish CROOKED RIVER BURNING you'll find you have a new vision. Bravo for the author! My highest recommendation!

Review of Fodor's Buenos Aires, 1st Edition (Fodor's Gold Guides) (Paperback)

It's amazing how important it is to get an up-to-date guide book. This book was extremely helpful with great restaurant selections, helpful tips about cabs and insightful history notes.A couple of the addresses were correct as listed, but incorrectly marked on the maps, so beware. And prices had changed slightly, but that's to be expected. All and all, a good bible for a visit to a new city.

Review of Dave Barry in Cyberspace (Paperback)

Let me start by saying that I love Dave Barry's work -- I've been reading everything he's written since the early-'80's, always with great anticipation. With that said, I regret to report that this book is merely OKAY.Of course it was funny (how could Dave Barry not be?!), but I only found maybe two or three rolling-on-the-ground-laughing parts. So, if you're a fan of his, or if you have an interest in computers, you should definitely read it.Just don't expect as much side-splitting as other reviewers have claimed. For laugh-out-loud-til-you-wet-yourself Dave Barry humor, I recommend any collection of his weekly columns, and also *Dave Barry Slept Here*.

Product Description
Luckily Buenos Aires is not all about football and tango. Currently the toast of South America, Argentina's capital has seen unprecedented growth and development since the economic crash of 2002. Urban renewal has led to the gentrification of the city's seedier barrios transforming artisan's workshops into cutting-edge restaurants, chic shops and the hippest of hotels. The recent opening of small, design focused hotels such as Home and Bobo have attracted as much interest as Phillippe Starck's offering the Faena Hotel + Universe. Buenos Aires is stylish, the elegantly sophisticated porteñas know how to shop and the streets of Palermo Viejo, the city's hippest barrio, are littered with cutting edge Argentine fashion and design led restaurants/bars. Beyond the look, locals possess almost unfathomable levels of stamina and are often to be found partying into the morning sunlight on a weekday night.

Review of Censored 2007: The Top 25 Censored Stories (Paperback)

With each and every corporate media mega-merger, the news industry becomes less competitive and, as a result, less informative. These days, it is becoming increasingly difficult to get real news. Luckily, for those who want to keep informed, there is Project Censored (PC), a non-profit news organization developed by Peter Phillips, Professor of Sociology at Sonoma University. This year's CENSORED 2007 is PC's 30th anniversary edition and, along with the top 25 censored stories of the year and the usual array of supplementary essays on media bias, this year's edition includes updates on the most important stories of the last 30 years - a nifty bonus. 2007 stories include:

1.The Future of the Internet: giant cable companies seek a monopoly on cable Internet
2.Halliburton charged with selling nuclear secrets to Iran - illegally - under Cheney
3.The worldwide death of oceans: warming, toxic buildup, dead zones, changing PH balance, fish, grass and kelp die offs
4.Hunger and homelessness in the US on the rise: Government solution? Discontinue Census surveys that keep statistical tables on poverty
5.US supports genocide in the Congo to gain access to resources used to make high-tech gadgetry such as cell phones
6.The end of federal whistleblower protections
7.US operatives torture detainees to death in Afghanistan and Iraq
8.Pentagon exempts itself from the Freedom of Information Act
9.World Bank funds the Palestine-Israel Wall
10. The death toll of civilians in Iraq from the expanded air war
11. Dangers of genetically modified foods confirmed
12. The dangers of common pesticides like Roundup
13. Homeland Security contracts KBR (a Halliburton subsidiary) to build detention centers in the US
14. The EPA's primary research partner is the chemical industry
15. Ecuador and Mexico defy the US on the international criminal court
16. The Iraq reconstruction promotes OPEC agenda: profit for major US oil companies
17. Physicist concludes that official 9/11 explanation is scientifically implausible
18. Destruction of rainforests is at an all-time high
19. Bottled water: a global environmental problem
20. Gold mining threatens ancient Andean glaciers
21. Billions in homeland security undisclosed
22. US Oil targets Kyoto in Europe
23. Cheney's Halliburton stock rose of 3000 percent last year
24. Pentagon plans to build new landmines
25. US military in Paraguay threatens the region

But don't just stop at the headlines. The stories are packed with details, sources, links, and at the end of the book there is a wonderful appendix of alternative media venues. Perhaps the most important publication in journalism, CENSORED should not be overlooked.

Mandatory annual reading.
